Why Envy Peru, the History-Making First Winner of 'Drag Race Holland,' Is the Best Winner in 'RuPaul's Drag Race' History

The season 1 finale of RuPaul’s Drag Race spinoff Drag Race Holland has aired, and in the words of RuPaul, we have a “winner, baby!” The Peruvian-born Envy Peru took home the crown after dominating the season and tying the record for most challenges won by a queen in a single season.

Peru slayed the competition and was considered to be the frontrunner for most of the duration of the season.

She competed in the grand finale with her drag sister, Miss Abby OMG, as well as Janey Jacké and Ma’Ma Queen. Jacké and Peru were the final two, with Peru winning the final lip-sync and untimely taking the crown and being named Holland’s Next Drag Superstar.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly talking about her win, Peru said, “I’m proud to be a face, example, and role model for the Latin community. They’re lacking acceptance.”

She wants to be the person that she could have looked up to while growing up.

“There’s a lot of machismo there, so I just want to show the kids who are queer that you can achieve your dreams, even though you’re Latin and queer,” she continued. “You’re not nothing. I want to be an example for them and, hopefully, with this crown, I can make a difference so that mothers who have queer kids can be more accepting and see queerness as a blessing instead of a flaw.”

Why Envy Peru is the franchise’s top winner

Statistically, Peru is the best winner to ever win the title of Drag Superstar. First of all, she is one of only four queens who have won four wins in their original season (not counting All Stars seasons, of course). The only other queens who have one four challenges in a season are Sharon Needles (RuPaul’s Drag Race season 4), Shea Coulee (RuPaul’s Drag Race season 9) and Gigi Goode (RuPaul’s Drag Race season 12). Out of those three, Needles is the only winner.

Bianca Del Rio was considered to be statistically the best winner, as she never placed low and was never in the bottom 2. But now, Envy Peru is statistically the best winner because she has more wins than Del Rio and was never in the bottom 2 or placed low.

Drag Race Holland has not been renewed for a season 2 officially, but all signs point for it to come back for another round as the Drag Race franchise continues to expand. If you haven’t watched the season yet, you can binge the entire thing now on WOW Presents Plus in the United States and other areas outside of the Netherlands.
