Psych-os will have to wait for iiiiiit a while longer.
James Roday, who played fake psychic detective Shawn Spencer in USA’s comedy series, Psych, commented on changes to the sequel including a delayed premiere and a change of platform. Find out what the cast of ‘Psych’ is worth day.
Originally, the sequel to Psych: The Movie, had been scheduled for later this year. Psych: The Movie premiered in early Dec. 2017 with Psych-os (the nickname for fans of the show) likely assuming the follow-up would have a similar trajectory.
However, Psych-os will have to wait until 2020 to see Shawn reunite with his best friend, Burton “Gus” Guster (Dulé Hill), and others from the Santa Barbara Police Department. And instead of the movie premiering on USA, it has a new home on NBCU’s forthcoming streaming service, Peacock, according to Entertainment Weekly.
On Sept. 17, 2019, Roday tweeted the following message to his Psych followers on Twitter:
“Hey Psych-os! This kinda stuff happens way above our pay grade but we still can’t wait for you to see our latest TIMfoolery and I don’t think it will cost you anything but a little bit more time….,” he tweeted along with emojis of praying hands, a stack of pancakes, and a pineapple (a fruit that’s become synonymous with the show) in response to an article from Deadline about the delay and network change.
Understandably, the changes to the sequel are the reason for the delayed release date.
The sequel has a name
In addition to the aforementioned changes, it was also revealed that the sequel had a name: Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.

A nod to Detective Carlton Lassiter, played by Timothy Omundson, the sequel will be focused on Lassie. This is welcome news to Psych-os who were disappointed about only seeing the actor very briefly in Psych: The Movie.
How Psych-os reacted to the delay
While we were just as bummed out about the announcement of the later release date, we did enjoy seeing fan reactions on Twitter.
Many replied with GIFs from the show. One person tweeted one of Gus crying and eating while another shared one of Lassiter saying, “Trust me. I’m ready.”
Our personal favorite came in the form of quote from Shawn that read, “I don’t like having my emotions toyed with like that.”
Until the sequel premieres, Roday will continue to star in the NBC show, A Million Little Things. As for Hill, he played Nat King Cole in the Geffen Playhouse musical, Lights Out: Nat “King” Cole from Feb. – March 2019. He also ended his time on another USA series, Suits, which had its series finale earlier this month.
Roday and Hill starred in Psych from 2006-2014 and later gained more fans when it became available on Netflix. After the streaming service dropped Psych — find out why here — another platform scooped it up: Amazon. That’s right, the entire series is available on Amazon Prime Video. That means Psych-os have plenty of time to rewatch the show before the 2020 premiere of Psych 2: Lassie Come Home.
