Joker is this year’s frontrunners with a whopping 11 nominations, while The Irishman and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood follow on behind with 10.
The supervillain drama, starring Joaquin Phoenix and directed by Todd Phillips, looks set to dominate on the night as the front runner, and will compete for Best Film alongside 1917, The Irishman, Once Upon A Time… In Hollywood and Parasite.
As well as Little Women’s lack of director nod, fans were also displeased at the fact the movie did not feature in the Best Film category.
Speaking of J.Lo’s absence, fans penned: ‘Wtf where’s jlo ????????????… When Margot Robbie and Scarlett Johansson each get two noms, over names like Lupita Nyong’o, Jennifer Lopez, Awkwafina and Cynthia Erivo…

Shocker: Jennifer absence was causing outrage on social media
‘Or talent in British films like Marianne Jean-Baptiste or BIFA winner Ruthxjiah Bellenea — it makes BAFTA look almost stubbornly limited.’
On Greta’s lack of the big nod, Twitter users penned: ‘Umm so the BAFTA’s are a little bit of a mess this year imo… These BAFTA noms suck so hard where are Noah, Greta and Rian in the best director category??…
‘Why Todd Phillips when you could literally have Greta Gerwig, Noah Baumbach or Lulu Wang?! Jeez… Where’s Greta?… thought i could trust the bafta’s but they didn’t nominate greta for best director or little women for best picture…
‘#BAFTA No Greta Gerwig for Best Director or Little Women for Best Film.’
Fuming: Fans seemed to think Greta was most deserving of the director nod
Marriage Story was a hot topic, with many fans believing the movie was overlooked.
Fans soon flooded the microblogging site to pen: ‘Fair play, For me I’d put marriage story over the joker… just gonna assume yous didn’t even see Marriage Story or Little Women if you thought Joker was better directed… marriage story really got robbed from the bafta nominations huh…?
Greta’s snub comes after she candidly discussed her fears over directing Hollywood heavyweight Meryl Streep in Little Women.

Fury: Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver are the stars of Marriage Story
The Lady Bird star 36, said she was left ‘terrified’ at the prospect of directing the three-time Oscar winner, 70, but the experience of working with the Hollywood icon who played Aunt March, ‘forced her to be better.’
She said: ‘Oh, I was terrified as a director, because what am I going to say to her? She’s so smart and she knows more about how films are made than anyone.
‘There were a couple of lines I wrote to get a character from A to B, inelegantly, and you know when Meryl asks, “Now why do I say that?” you’d better have a f*****g good answer.

Upsetting: Greta’s snub comes after she candidly discussed her fears over directing Hollywood heavyweight Meryl Streep in Little Women
‘It’s intimidating, but it forces you to be better. Unfortunately, it’s uncomfortable to get better, because it means you have to look like an idiot in front of her. But she’s fabulous.’
Discussing the process behind turning Little Women into a film, she added: ‘It made me cry, both while I was writing it and then making it. Now I have no feelings left. Little Women feels as personal as anything I’ll ever make.
‘Everyone who works with me can attest to this – I go into a zone where I don’t wash or return calls and I go feral. I can go into hyperfocus as well as becoming more scattered. I like things that have a great deal of pressure and a lot of deadlines, because I need it.’
Greta made her solo directorial debut in 2017 with the acclaimed Lady Bird, which she also wrote.
