George Michael’s sister slams Elton John’s ‘uncomfortable’ gay claims

George Michael’s sister has slammed Elton John’s recent claims that the Careless Whisper singer was ‘uncomfortable’ with being a gay man.

In a recent interview with US show The Talk, Sir Elton claimed that George had an issue with his sexuality and also ‘didn’t want to be here’.

However, the late singer’s sister Melanie Panayiotou says it couldn’t be further from the truth.

Speaking to The Big Issue, Melanie said George ‘was “my very proud to be gay” brother, contrary to what you may have read recently’.

Elton, 72, and George, who died on Christmas Day in 2016, were very close friends and famously collaborated on the song Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me.

George kept the truth of his sexuality private until he was arrested in 1998 for engaging in a ‘lewd act’ in front of an undercover police officer in Beverly Hills.

Opening up about his sexuality, the Wham! Singer later said in an interview: ‘I never had a moral problem with being gay.

‘I thought I had fallen in love with a woman a couple of times. Then I fell in love with a man, and realised that none of those things had been love.’

Elton spoke at length about George and his alleged demons during his appearance on The Talk in October.

The Candle In The Wind singer said of the late singer’s battle with addiction: ‘He couldn’t get it, George. And he resented the fact that I had hinted that maybe he change his life a little bit and he’d be happier if he tried something else.

‘The person has actually got to want it. It’s like me in the end; I really wanted it. I had two alternatives: one, to die, and one to live, and I wanted to live. But that’s the difference if you want it, and poor George didn’t want it.’

He added: ‘He was so uncomfortable in his skin about being gay even though he said he wasn’t.’

Fans were delighted last week to hear a previously unheard and unreleased song from George titled This Is How (We Want You To Get High), which is set to appear on the Last Christmas movie soundtrack.
