Charlene White told fans that she had “shed a tear” while reading an article about her former ITV News boss Geoff Hill on the way to work today. The 41-year-old said the broadcast journalist, who died earlier this month at the age of 52, was “something special”.

Geoff was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2017 and died in hospital surrounded by family on September 16.

The award-winning TV editor had enjoyed a career in journalism spanning 30 years.

Charlene, who has presented the news on ITV since 2008, worked with Geoff during some of her time on the network.

“Cancer sucks,” Loose Women star, 41, commented when she took to Twitter today.

Alongside a picture of a newspaper article about Geoff, she wrote: “I’m sat reading this on the train into work, and it’s got me shedding a tear for our former @itvnews Editor Geoff Hill – my old boss.

“He really was something special, and just a incredible wonderful man.(sic)

“The industry is poorer without him.

“We’ll miss him so much. Cancer sucks,” she added, in view of her 51,800 followers.

Following the news of Geoff’s death, many took to social media to pay tribute to the ITV journalist.

“What incredibly sad news,” began ex Good Morning Britain presenter Piers Morgan on Twitter.

“A brilliant journalist beloved by his newsroom colleagues, and a great guy who fought his illness with such courage and good humour.

“Had the honour of working with him at CNN & ITV and he was a class act, both professionally & personally. RIP Geoff,” he went on to write.

Piers’s ex GMB colleague, Susanna Reid added: “Above all else, Geoff was a thoroughly lovely man.

“This is so, so sad. Sending love to his wonderful family.”

Her co-star Charlotte Hawkins described Geoff as “a giant in the industry”.

He will “be much missed”, she said.

Geoff is survived by his wife Nat and their three children – Emily, Olivia and Alfie.

He joined London Tonight in 1993 and moved to ITV News in 2000.

Charlene became a presenter on ITV News at 5.30pm eight years later.

In addition to presenting the news, the mum-of-two is now a regular anchor on Loose Women, joining the line-up at the start of 2021 following an appearance on the show the year before.
