Margot Robbie talks marriage, her ‘unglamorous life’ and why she’s so focused on female empowerment

A former Neighbours actress still – somewhat incredibly – in her twenties, Margot Robbie's rise to superstardom has been nothing short of meteoric. Her career continues to go from strength to strength after recently bagging her second Oscar nomination in just three years for her latest film, the Fox News exposé Bombshell.

The female-dominated movie also stars Hollywood heavy-hitters Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman and tells the story of three women at the news channel who lift the lid on the sleazy ways of CEO Roger Ailes and his sexual harassment.

In an exclusive interview with the 29 year-old I, Tonya star, we asked her all about Bombshell, what we can expect from her next film (the Suicide Squad spin-off Birds Of Prey) and quizzed her about what married life is like with husband Tom Ackerley.

During our chat with Margot, we asked her what the most surprising thing was about Hollywood was when she first arrived.

"I guess I was surprised by how different it was to Australia, but the most surprising thing was when I first walked on set and there was one of those director chairs with my name on the back of it. I flipped out! I was like, 'This is the coolest thing. Is it a joke or something?' They were like, 'No, it’s written into everyone’s contracts. It’s a union rule to have your own chair with your name on it.' That’s really cool, because everyone gets to take the back of the chair home after each job."

We wondered how much married life had changed the Aussie actress since she and Tom tied the knot.

"I love being married," she gushed. "Married life is great, but not much has changed. When Tom and I met, we were best friends and we were roommates. Now we’re married, but we’re still best friends and roommates, so it’s pretty much the same."

"The biggest misconception people have about me is that I spend all my time sitting on a yacht or at a fancy party. I wish! It’s the funniest thing, because making films is the least glamorous thing ever. For the most part, you’re sitting in a car park and you only have portaloos. There’s nothing glamorous about it. I think people have this idea that making movies is often done in a gorgeous studio where you have a latte in your hand and you swan around to parties afterwards, but that’s not true."

Margot's performance in her latest film, Bombshell, is winning her lots of praise and award nominations at the moment. We asked her if her role was based on a real person…

"Kayla is a fictional character," she told us. "But she’s an amalgamation of women who have worked at Fox News who can’t come forward to tell these stories themselves, or who have already come forward with testimonies that are on public record. It has been an incredible privilege to get to tell these women’s stories. I hope other people who feel like they perhaps can’t come forward find some solace or reckoning in watching this movie."

Bombshell really is a thought-provoking movie and it's made the actress reflect on a few things personally.

"It has definitely made me think about power,” she confessed to us. “You get to a certain place in your career and you suddenly have power and influence. When you know you can do something, it’s important to check yourself and think, 'How am I using this power that I have?' 'Am I doing something with it and am I being wise with it?'”

“I think it’s important to recognise that you don’t have to have a huge amount of power to make a difference, because you have a voice and you can do something."

"I love the fact that women are now going to marches, voting and educating themselves on issues. Women are talking to their friends about things that have happened, or believing their friends. I think that with any bit of power you have, if you use it wisely, it can make a difference."

Her upcoming movie, Birds Of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn, is also all about female empowerment. It's a sequel to Suicide Squad and was actually developed by Robbie herself.

"After I finished Suicide Squad, I felt like there was still so much to be explored with the character," she told us.

"I wanted to see her with a bit of a girl gang, so I went away and developed a story with a writer and that was how this movie came about. In real life, I have so many groups of girlfriends that are like my girl gang and I rarely see that depicted on screen. I wanted to see a group of women come together and kick a*s!"
