23 Unexpectedly Sad Movies Guaranteed To Make You Cry

We recently asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us the most unexpectedly sad movie they’ve ever seen. Here are their responses:

1.Bridge to Terabithia

“I was young when Bridge to Terabithia came out so I hadn’t read the book and just thought it was a fun, lighthearted kids movie. We were all totally shocked when Leslie just up and dies in the end! I later watched it on a plane and it left the 200 pound football coach sitting next to me with tears streaming down his face.”

“I’m pretty sure none of us expected that opening scene. It’s one of the sweetest and saddest Disney movies ever.”

3.The Boy in the Striped Pajamas

“Look, I knew going in that it would be a sad movie. However, I did not expect the absolutely DEVASTATING ending that left me sobbing like a child. I have never had a movie make me cry so hard in all my life.”

“It’s supposed to be a comedy, but the part where he’s running in the rain after his children and falls and die’s laying on the cold ground was heartbreaking. I lost my cool and balled my eyes out.”

5.The Fox and the Hound

I thought Disney movies were supposed to be happy! This one devastated me entirely. It has abandonment and the end of a friendship. It’s heartbreaking.

6.The Descendants

“The trailer made it seem like it was going to be a somewhat lighthearted dramedy with lots of comedic moments, but boy oh boy I was not prepared to be sitting on my couch uncontrollably sobbing.”

7.About Time

“It’s one of the sweetest, funniest, and most heart-wrenching love stories of all time.”

8.Diary of a Mad Black Woman

“I thought I was gonna sit there and laugh my butt off for the next two hours. Instead I had to use my T-shirt as a Kleenex.”

9.Grave of the Fireflies

“That movie absolutely tore my little eight-year-old heart apart. I cry every time I think about it. It is not really a movie for the kids.”

10.Pan’s Labyrinth

“I thought Pan’s Labyrinth was a kids’ movie about some fantastical world. I expected some creepy things (which were there). I did not expect it to include the heart-wrenching plot about the war in Spain. Even as I realized it was a deeper movie than I thought, the ending still shocked me.”

11.Lilo and Stitch

“I thought it would be a comedy about a child and an alien, but seeing Nani struggle to care for her little sister and watching the other girls bully Lilo caught six-year-old me off guard.”

12.Toy Story 3

“I was bawling into my popcorn when they were in the incinerator about to be burned and they were all saying goodbye and accepting their fates. Twelve-year-old me definitely didn’t expect to have a scene like that in a movie about children’s toys.”

13.The Bicycle Thief

“I was a mess at the end of the movie. Did not expect that. If you’ve never seen it, look for it! Great Italian movie.”

14.Simon Birch

“Thought it was a movie about a cute kid. I cried for an hour afterwards, ruining a first date.”

15.The Rugrats Movie

“A bit embarrassing now, but The Rugrats Movie really got to me! The scene that did it was when Tommy and Dil were lost in the woods together, and Tommy tries to comfort him like a good big brother would. Ugh, the feels.”

16.Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again!

“It made me cry so much!”

17.La La Land

“Mia and Seb were perfect for each other and I cried so hard when they saw each other in Seb’s club and she was married with a child.”

18.Dead Poets Society

“It just took such an unexpected turn. Every time I watch it I secretly hope the ending won’t happen or will be different, even though a movie can’t just change.”

19.Inside Out

“The trailers made it look so happy and funny and the movie was nearly heartbreaking. Way more sad than I thought a Pixar movie could be.”

20.Lady Bird

“I expected a comedy and it cut me deeply. Excellent film, but watching it breaks my heart.”

21.Me Before You

“The devastating ending wasn’t what I was expecting in the seemingly typical rom-com framing of the movie. I really expected them to live happily ever after.”

22.Big Hero 6

“Didn’t really know anything about the plot and I ended up sobbing at three different parts. It was awful. I loved it.”

23.A Walk to Remember

“Devastating. No doubt about it. Basically anything Nicholas Sparks is.”
