Parenting young kids can be an infuriating process, and anyone who tells you otherwise is lying. Happily, even our fave celebs don’t pretend that raising toddlers is a cake walk, with Cate Blanchett sharing the hardest part of being a mom to her 4-year-old this week. There’s no deep wisdom or underlying moral — when you’re dealing with a 4-year-old, who has the time? Instead, Blanchett is just dealing with same antics the rest of us do: a little girl who marches to the beat of her own drum and doesn’t have much time for people getting in her way.
The Oscar winner opened up to People about her parenting woes this week. When the magazine asked her what the hardest part of parenting was, Blanchett offered this reply, referring to daughter Edith Vivian Patricia: “Trying to apply sunscreen to a 4-year-old.” We definitely hear that! Oh, and one more thing: “Being kicked in the head by all the small feet in my bed at 3 a.m.” Check and check. Two decidedly un-fun parts of dealing with that particular age.
Blanchett shares four kids with husband Andrew Upton: Edith, Ignatius Martin (age 11), Roman Robert (age 15) and Dashiell John (age 17). The 50-year-old actress may have a complaint or two about the day-to-day challenges, but everything else about parenting is the “easiest” thing for this Oscar winner. Plus, they keep her humble. Talking about how she breaks character after a long day of shooting, Blanchett had this to say: “I take the wig off and have dinner with my children, who tolerate zero navel-gazing.”
Of course, it can’t be easy balancing an Oscar-winning career with four kids, especially when her daughter’s still so young. But luckily, it doesn’t sound like Blanchett is missing out on any of the highs and lows of bringing up Edith, whether she’s prepping for a day at the beach or just trying to get a few hours of sleep.
