How Many Pets Do Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Have?

When you’re a member of the royal family, you are naturally thrust into the spotlight and live in the lap of luxury. This is entirely true for American-born princess Meghan Markle, but even more accurate for the four-legged members of Markle’s family. Her beagle, Guy, went from living on the streets of Kentucky to lounging around luxurious Kensington Palace. But, he’s not the only pet who resides with Markle and Prince Harry. The couple follows a pattern of royals who love their dogs.

Markle and Prince Harry are certainly not the only members of the royal family to live with a few furry friends. The Queen herself has always had a Corgi companion since she was gifted one on her 18th birthday.

Taking after his mother Prince Charles, and wife Camilla Parker Bowles, also have pets in their home. The couple most recently adopted two Jack Russel Terriers from a shelter that Parker Bowles supports.

Prince William and Kate Middleton added a pup to their family too, before the birth of their first child. Their Cocker Spaniel, Lupo, appears alongside the family at many family outings and is clearly an important member of their growing clan. People reports that the family also has a hamster named Marvin and several chickens at their home.

Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie also contribute canine members to the royal bunch. Between the two of them, they own five Norfolk terriers.

Rescuing pets is a cause close to Markle’s heart. She, of course, owned two rescue dogs — Guy and Bogart — before she moved to the UK. When she began dating Prince Harry, the actress lived in Toronto with her two favorite guys: her dogs. As a rescue dog owner, she has chosen pet adoption to be one of the things she focuses on as one of her first patronages. She has chosen to support Mayhew, an animal shelter and charity that helps find homes for pets.

“As a proud rescue dog owner, I know from personal experience the joy that adopting an animal into your home can bring,” she wrote in a piece explaining why Mayhew specifically touched her heart. “The role that we, as people, play in rehoming and rescuing these animals is vital, but the role of organisations such as Mayhew is unparalleled. What initially struck me about Mayhew specifically is their community based approach not simply on rehoming animals, but in the preventative care that inhibits these cats and dogs from ending up in shelters in the first place.”

Prince Harry and Markle have adopted a second dog who has received the royal treatment. Including, fierce protection of the pup’s privacy. The couple has kept her name a secret, although we know all the things her name is not, her title has yet to be revealed. It’s believed she is a Labrador mix.

Markle continues to promote the idea of adoption. Urging those who read her words to consider adopting their next pet instead of purchasing one.

“The choice to adopt a pet is a big decision,” the duchess continues, “…[it] comes with much responsibility but infinite return on investment,” she wrote. “It will undoubtedly change your life.”

In January, as part of her patronage of the animal shelter, Markle visited Mayhew, to play with several of the dogs available for adoption. She noted that although there were a couple that tugged on her heartstrings, they couldn’t take on another pet before Baby Archie made his arrival.

The pair have the two rescue pups that live with them in Windsor: Guy, Meghan’s beagle, and their newly adopted Labrador pal. But, Markle had a second dog before she was married. Her lab-mix, Bogart, needed to stay in Canada due to his age. He’s currently residing with close friends. We bet Markle still considers him part of the family too.
