This TikTok hack for cutting a cake with a wine glass is pure genius

This hack is a piece of cake you won’t whine about.

TikTok, a destination that’s become quite the hub for clever or wacky viral DIYs, has what could be the perfect hack for your next birthday gathering: Cutting a cake with wine glasses.

A video showing a unique cake-cutting method has gone viral, racking up over 1.6 million views and garnering some half-million likes since it was posted Nov. 22.

Posted by user @theroseperiod, a group of pals celebrating a woman named Jules’ 20th birthday begins with the b-day gal blowing out the candles. Then, everyone begins to serve themselves a slice of cake simply by using a wine glass to scoop the perfect circular piece, holding just the stem of the glass.

The hack is not only nifty, but quick to get started noshing on cake in a jiffy without trying to find a knife or wrestling to get the slice on a plate. But, beyond the speed, it’s the ultimate trick for anyone celebrating during the pandemic, since it requires no touching the food. The CDC reports that “no cases of COVID-19 have been identified where infection was thought to have occurred by touching food, food packaging or shopping bags.” However, the agency notes that it’s “always important to follow good food safety practices to reduce the risk of illness from common foodborne pathogens.”

So, germaphobes and wine connoisseurs, this one’s for you. Icing lovers, it’s even more ideal for you since the frosting will be at the bottom of glass, saving the best for last.

For this cake, which appears to be multi-layered, a deep wine glass with a stem to hold is key. But for a single sheet cake, one might even be able to get away with a smaller size cup.
