Shona (pictured) is single with one adult son
VITAL STATISTICS
Single with one adult son.
CURRENT ROLE
Well-being consultant and a mental health coach.
WOULD LIKE TO MEET
Someone kind, funny and spiritual. A man who is happy for me to be me.
Shona, 53
Dating Past
I was married twice for a year each in 1989 and 2006. I’ve been single for four years and prefer the single life to being miserable in a bad relationship. I won’t settle or compromise just to be in a ‘couple’. I don’t need someone in my life to complete me, but rather complement and enhance what I already have.
SHONA’S VERDICT: 7/10
LIKED? He was open, friendly, good-humoured.
REGRETS? Lack of chemistry.
COFFEE OR CAB? Friendly coffee.
Pre-Date Nerves?
I wasn’t nervous but just excited for the unknown and hoping for some romantic frisson. I spent weeks thinking about what to wear and settled for a burnt orange broderie anglaise dress.
First Impressions?
Nick was there first and I thought he looked very nice. He had made an effort and was wearing a dark shirt and trousers with shiny shoes. He got up and gave me a kiss on the cheek. And he had a lovely warm smile, which made me relax.
Easy To Talk To?
Nick was easy to talk to and we chatted away about our work and families. I used to run a pub where he lives now, so I knew the town well. He also does a job that I used to do in sales. He spoke with real passion about what he does. He seems a dedicated family man, who came across as kind with a gregarious spirit. He made me laugh.
Embarrassing Moments?
None.
Did Sparks Fly?
There was no flirting at all from either of us. I think we friend-zoned each other quite quickly but it turned out to be a really lovely lunch. We even got on the bus and went for another drink afterwards. Nick was quite self-deprecating, but I told him he was a delightful person. I did suggest he perhaps got some counselling as I know how powerful it can be. I’m used to being supportive in my job, so tried to make him feel more positive.
See him again?
I gave him my business card and suggested we could meet up for a dog walk at a sunflower farm near where he lives as I’ve always wanted to visit.
What do you think he thought of you?
He took a selfie of us and sent it to his daughters, who replied that I was beautiful. He said that I shone in the picture, which was lovely. But though we got on well, there was no spark.
Would your family and friends like him?
He’s very likeable, so yes. He deserves someone really lovely.
Nick, 57
VITAL STATISTICS
Never been married; has three adult daughters.
CURRENT ROLE
Market development manager.
WOULD LIKE TO MEET
Someone attractive, daring, fun and spontaneous. I’m not interested in a gold-digger.
NICK’S VERDICT: 10/10
LIKED? She was friendly and kind.
REGRETS? I didn’t meet the woman of my dreams.
COFFEE OR CAB? Prosecco.
Relationship History
I’ve been single for five years after a ten-year relationship. I’ve dabbled with online dating but don’t give it much time as women never seem to match with me.
Pre-Date Nerves
None. I was really looking forward to it. I wanted to make an effort and wore a blue shirt and trousers.
First Impressions
I thought Shona was lovely when she walked in wearing an eye-catching orange dress. She had a warm smile and I felt really comfortable.
Easy To Talk To?
We covered everything from family, jobs and our pasts to books and animals. We both love dogs and we had a few other shared interests, too.
When she told me her job, I suggested I could be her next client. She said I would benefit from doing some work on myself, and I agree. She’s had some counselling in the past and really recommended it.
She told me I could also work on building my confidence a bit more, which I thought was spot-on as I can be quite self-deprecating.
I’d shined my shoes well for the date and she told me to keep doing that as I had showed up well!
I laughed that instead of ‘Coffee or Cab?’ I would write ‘Couch’ as she was analysing me so well.
Embarrassing Moments?
I got her name wrong initially which was embarrassing, but she laughed and seemed to forget it quickly.
Did Sparks Fly?
I didn’t feel any chemistry and neither of us was flirting. We got on really well but I didn’t think that spark was there.
She is very attractive and she may have been disappointed in me.
I tend to make jokes at my own expense and she told me I should be more assertive.
I think she’s probably right. But I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the date.
See Her Again?
She mentioned a walk and I’d like to do that as I enjoyed her company.
We went for a drink afterwards and I felt so relaxed with her.
What do you think she thought of you?
Possibly that I’m old and talk a lot!
Would your family and friends like her?
My daughters would definitely like her, but we have very different lifestyles: I’m more 9-to-5 while she’s more spontaneous.
