EastEnders viewers were left distracted during a harrowing scene between Ash Pansear and a patient at the hospital – who had similarities to comedian Catherine Tate.
Fans thought Catherine Tate, who famously appeared on her own show titled Catherine Tate's Nan, which saw her dressed as an elderly version of herself, appeared at the hospital.
On Thursday night's episode fans were witnessing Ash Pansear becoming the target of casual racism as an elderly patient repeatedly asked for a doctor "from here".
While Ash proceeded to tell her she was "from here", the patient persisted, with the trainee doctor ultimately asking Sonia to take her bloods.
As many viewers took to Twitter to share their devastation for what Ash was dealing with, others were adamant that they had recognised the patient from somewhere before…
Taking to Twitter, one user wrote: "Wait, was that Catherine Tate dressed up as nan?"
Another wrote: "Fantastic to see Catherine' Tate's 'Gran' character making a surprise cameo on this evening's EastEnders."
A third person said: "'What a f*****g liberty' Catherine Tate's guest spot on EastEnders."
Meanwhile, another baffled fan said: "I genuinely thought that old woman was Catherine Tate playing nan."
However, while viewers were happily chuckling to themselves at the idea that Catherine Tate would appear on the BBC One soap, others were left devastated for Ash.
While the patient was asking for someone else, they appeared to give many other reasons before landing on the fact that they wanted someone "from here".
Ash ultimately left the patient, but viewers were quick to praise her and the show for addressing casual racism.
One user wrote: "Ash! I'm so glad we're being shown this low-key, undercard type of racism on our screens. Racism is racism."
Another said: "Poor Ash, racism is never acceptable."
A third person wrote: "I feel so sorry for Ash, she doesn't deserve any of this."
