James Argent has said ex Lydia Bright is supporting him through recovery from his gastric surgery, and he is aiming to fill his Essex mansion with a family.

The TOWIE star had gastric sleeve surgery two weeks ago to help him slim down from 27.5 stone, a weight he has previously said put him at risk of dying from coronavirus.

Arg has been getting loyal support since his op from an unexpected source – his ex-girlfriend Lydia Bright, and her mum Debbie.

Talking about his weight loss surgery and recovery on Loose Women on Tuesday, Arg said: "Lydia's been amazing, we're not together obviously, but we've known each other since we were teenagers so we're always going to be extremely close friends.

"I'm glad that I've got her back in my life as a friend. She's a close support, her and her mum Debbie who's amazing, she means the world to me."

Arg and Lydia were childhood sweethearts who had an on-off relationship that played out on TOWIE, but finally drew to a close in 2016.

Explaining what Lydia had been doing for him, Arg said: "When I wake up in the morning I'm receiving messages, there's been FaceTimes, I've been going on walks…we've had some nice little catch ups in the garden."

In February 2020, Lydia welcomed her first child, a daughter called Loretta Rose who she is bringing up alone.

Arg admitted that one of his biggest aims once he reaches his goal weight is to have a family of his own and said he thought he would make a great dad.

He said: "I've worked hard over the last 11 years and I'm fortunate to have a lovely family home in Essex, but I'm the only one living in it.

"I would love to meet someone, I would love to start a family. I feel that not only am I in a place where I can look after myself now, I also truly feel I'm in a place where I could look after and take care of a lady and take care of a child.

"That would be the dream for me, I've got huge goals, huge aspirations."

Arg added that he had had lots of family support as well as help from his friends and TOWIE co-stars Mark Wright and Joey Essex.
