Fans of Last Tango in Halifax on BBC One were emotional at the end of the last series which saw Alan and Celia rekindle their romance. The show last aired back in 2016 with a Christmas special across two episodes. The writer of the series has spoken out about whether more episodes are on the cards, and things sound promising.

Will there be a Last Tango in Halifax season 6?

The BBC series is about an elderly couple who, thanks to modern day technology, rekindle their relationship.

Anne Reid of Coronation Street, Dinnerladies and The Mother fame plays Celia, while I, Claudius star Sir Derek Jacobi portrays Alan. Celia and Alan used to like each other at school but lost touch.

Their grandchildren set them up on Facebook to see if they could find any of their old school friends and Celia popped up on Alan’s radar.

Across the series fans see their relationship blossom and they end up getting married as pensioners – but their union is not as happy as people may think.

Writer Sally Wainwright said the series is based loosely on her own mother, who married for a second time when she was in her seventies.

The show has gone down a storm with fans as it highlights how love can happen at any age, and is also an advocate for same-sex relationships.

Speaking to media, including Express.co.uk, Wainwright explained at a screening for the new series whether there is more to come.

She said she has been working on the current series for a long time and loves to create new content for the show.

She said: “Things like this can slowly tick away in your brain, they never go away. It’s a joy, it’s therapy.

“Gentleman Jack is hard to write as I’m following a diary and it’s intense. But with this I can make stuff up it’s really exciting.”

The aforementioned Gentleman Jack is also a much-loved series written by Wainwright, and is a period drama.

Gentleman Jack is based on Anne Lister’s diary entries and Wainwright explained she found this writing structure more difficult compared to Last Tango.

During the question and answer session she was asked whether she had thought of any new ideas for the Last Tango series, set in Halifax.

She went on to explain more about how the story is based on her own family, specifically her mother who remarried.

She said: “I think when you write the first series you aren’t thinking beyond that, but it’s based so much around my mum it’s a self-generating thing and it feels like it could go on and on.

“She got married again, when she was 73 she got in touch with people in her class and one man contacted her. At 75 they absolutely fell in love with each other.”

She explained her daily routine of waking up at the crack of dawn to get her creative thoughts on paper.

Wainwright said: “I get into the habit of waking up early at 5am every day as my brain works better, I’m not very good at taking holiday.”

When asked whether there is more to come for Alan and Celia, she said: “I hope there will be another series, I would like to write this until the cows come home.”

From Wainwright’s enthusiasm for the series and as well as the cast members, she is keen to keep the story going.

The series also features Alan’s daughter Gillian (played by Nicola Walker) and Anne’s daughter Caroline (Sarah Lancashire).
