'Lord of the Rings' Series Will Have A Large Episode Count

Amazon’s new Lord of the Rings series is a long way off from production, but already information is trickling down about a possible large episode count for season 1. Amazon recently revealed in a behind-the-scenes video called “Fellowship,” introducing the creative team working on the upcoming series. One of the members of the fellowship, Tom Shippey, is considered a “Tolkien Scholar.” He’ll be helping adapt J.R.R. Tolkien’s work for the show. He let slip information about the highly anticipated series in a recent interview.

The upcoming season of ‘Lord of the Rings’ will have 20 episodes

Shippey participated in an interview with Deutsche Tolkienabout the upcoming show. He said he didn’t know much, although it sounds likehe may know more than he is letting on. He did, however, reveal that the serieswill have an initial 20 episodes. He revealed the information when talkingabout filming locations.

“The exact locations are of course uncertain and it couldwell be several,” explainedShippey. “The shooting itself does not take place chronologically, but isoriented towards the locations. Logically, you try to bundle all the scenesthat take place in one location and film them so that you have it done anddon’t have to return to that place several times. But this also implies thateverything has to be clear at the start of filming, you have to know the end. There’s supposed to be 20 episodes for the first season. So until they’vedecided what the end is going to be, they can’t start filming.”

When will production start on season 1?

Shippey also spoke about the show airing in 2021, so production probably won’t start this year. When asked about when production would likely start, he wasn’t entirely sure, as there is still so much to do to get ready for th epic series.

“No. I know very, very little about the project anyway,”said Shippey. “As far as I know, they mean to start showing it on TV in 2021,so I don’t think production can start this year, though I don’t know what theirtimetable is. There is still a lot to do, just think of the costumes, weapons, locations, etc.!”

The series has its first cast member

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Australian actress Markella Kavenagh has been cast in the upcoming series. She is the first person to reportedly sign on. Reports reveal that she will play a character named Tyra on the new show. The series is set to be enormous, as Amazon paid $250 million for the rights to The Lord of the Rings in a deal with the Tolkien estate, published by HarperCollins and New Line.

When will the series be set in Middle-earth?

The series is set in the Second Age of Middle-earth, whichinvolves a lot of interesting material for the creators to draw from. The Ringsof Power were created during this time, as well as Lord Sauron coming to power.

The series is already set to have a multi-season commitment withAmazon and will air globally on Prime Video. JD Payne and Patrick McKay aredeveloping the story. J.A Bayona will also be directing the first two episodes.Bayona and his producing partner, Belén Atienza will be executive producers forthe series.
