EastEnders actor Rose Ayling-Ellis and her Strictly partner Giovanni Pernice performed a first for the show on Saturday evening as she wanted to pay respect and raise awareness for members of the deaf community. Midway through her dance with Giovanni, the music was cut and the pair continued to dance in silence – blowing BBC viewers and the judging panel away. So much so, the likes of Motsi Mabuse, Anton du Beke and Shirley Ballas were visibly emotional by the gesture.
Rose and Giovanni had taken to the floor to perform their Couple’s Choice to the chart smash hit, Symphony.
But as the pair twirled around the dance floor, midway through the sound was cut to highlight how Rose interprets the steps as a deaf performer.
Not missing a beat, the pair flawlessly stayed in rhythm as the music was reintroduced and the touching moment left the judges struggling for words.
As Tess Daly turned to the judges for their feedback after the routine, Motsi was first to weigh in.
She said: “Actually I wrote a few things and I was like, ‘This was better, this was better’, but in this case I honestly feel like saying thank you,
“Because I honestly feel like this was such a beautiful moment to include us in your world and for us to actually understand how important and how aware we all could be of each other generally everywhere.
“This was so special, sometimes it’s more than just scores and dancing, it was just the moment and we just had that. Thank you so much for that.”
“Well said, Motsi,” Giovanni replied. “Well said.”
Shirley then commented: “Well I feel first of all I should stand up out of respect for you sharing particularly the silent moment which totally I was not expecting it.
“It takes you into a much deeper place, I’m sure the deaf community will be absolutely so proud of you.
“And for sharing your heart and for being so honest and for being so true and for people to see such a beautiful lady like you can be so successful.
“This is a number that will be etched in my heart for a long, long time. It was absolutely beautiful.”

A choked-up Anton struggled to keep his composure as he praised Rose for her showstopping performance.
“You know, you get moments like this and I’ve been doing the show since the beginning,” he began. “Same as Craig and same as you Tess,
“And we’ve had the great pleasure and the great honour of being on Strictly Come Dancing for a long time – I’m getting a bit emotional.”
Fighting back tears, Anton concluded: “And that’s the greatest thing I’ve ever seen on the show. Congratulations.”
Craig was similarly taken aback but was still on hand to offer some words of critique about the dance.
Even after the dance, the tears kept flowing as Rose paid tribute to Giovanni for his “determination” and his work throughout the competition alongside her.
Overall, the pair scored 39 out of 40 for their routine.
Strictly continues Sunday at 7:20pm on BBC One.
