'Star Wars' Fans React To Gina Carano Being Fired From 'The Mandalorian'

Gina Carano appeared as Cara Dune on the first two seasons of The Mandalorian on Disney+. After Carano’s social media posts drew controversy, Lucasfilm announced on Feb. 10 that Carano was no longer part of the cast of The Mandalorian. Once the news of Carano’s firing was made public, fans of The Mandalorian reacted online.

Gina Carano is not part of ‘The Mandalorian’ cast

For months, Carano had been at odds with some fans of The Mandalorian for her social media activity. Following a recent controversy, io9 reported that Lucasfilm released a statement that Carano was fired from the franchise.

“Gina Carano is not currently employed by Lucasfilm and there are no plans for her to be in the future,” reads the statement. “Nevertheless, her social media posts denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.”

The Hollywood Reporter published that “Lucasfilm planned to unveil Carano as the star of her own Disney+ series… but scrapped those plans following her November tweets.”

Why Gina Carano was fired from ‘The Mandalorian’

Over the past few months, Carano brought negative publicity to The Mandalorian for her controversial social media activity. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actress “mocked mask-wearing amid the novel coronavirus pandemic and… falsely suggested voter fraud occurred during the 2020 presidential election.”

Following this controversy, Carano shared a post suggesting that having conservative views in the U.S. was the same as living in Nazi Germany. This post reportedly resulted in Lucasfilm making the decision to fire Carano.

According to Deadline, Carano wrote:

“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…even by children. Because history is edited, most people today don’t realize that to get to the point where Nazi soldiers could easily round up thousands of Jews, the government first made their own neighbors hate them simply for being Jews. How is that any different from hating someone for their political views.”

‘Star Wars’ fans reacted to the news

Before Carano was fired by Lucasfilm, some Star Wars fans used the hashtag #FireGinaCarano to push for her to lose her job. Once Lucasfilm fired Carano for her social media posts, other fans trended #CancelDisneyPlus on Twitter as a form of protest.

Despite the hashtag against Disney+, fans of The Mandalorian on Reddit seemed to be understanding about Carano no longer being on the show.

“As far as Cara Dune’s story goes in the Mandalorian, they pretty much left it at a fairly decent point. She took the job offered to her by the x-wing pilot so now there’s pretty much no real need to bring the character back. Sure they could, but she’s not absolutely essential to the show,” a fan wrote on Reddit.

“… she’s not the best actress but I really enjoyed Cara Dune as a character and concept… I tried really hard to separate the actor from the character during S2 but I just kept looking at her and thinking about how awful she is and all the harmful things she’s said. Totally ruined it for me,” another fan wrote on Reddit.
