The radio presenter addressed her transparent reaction to being in the bottom two last week and defended the “audible groan” she let out after her name was called out on Sunday night’s Strictly Come Dancing. The 35-year-old recalled the moment on her Hits Radio Breakfast Show on Tuesday, admitting she “can’t hide” her emotions.
Fleur and partner Vito Coppola were all too familiar with the sinking feeling of finding themselves drenched in red light and having to fight for their place in the competition.
She explained to Hits Radio listeners how it felt to be informed she’d be in the stressful dance-off once again.
“I can’t hide any of my emotions,” she commented. “I am just 100 percent out there!
“When Tess goes ‘And first in the dance off is…’ in your head you’re going, ‘Don’t say my name, don’t say my name, not me, not me, not me,’ and then she says ‘Fleur and Vito!’
“I was like, ‘Oh my goodness’ and I audibly groaned. I didn’t even know anyone could hear that!”
Justifying her understandable response, she continued: “But I’m obviously going to be groaning, I don’t want to be in the dance-off!
“I’m enjoying it and I want to be there every week so if you heard that groan that’s just real, that’s just me keeping it real!
“How are you going to react? You’re not going to go ‘Yes, let’s go it’s dance-off time!’
“You want to go through – that’s what you want to hear.”
Reflecting on difficult times she has been through, the singer added: “In life there are so many challenges, so many things you have to face, and I’m going to be 100 percent honest here, losing my Dad in 2020 is the hardest thing I have ever experienced, emotionally, mentally, and there’s been such a hole in my life ever since he left.
“The whole reason I’m doing this show is for him, so if to be in the dance-off is part of my journey, if that’s the challenge, there is going to be nothing harder than losing my father.
“So, I will pick myself up every time, remind myself why I’m there, keep fighting and come back stronger.”
After performing their dances for a second time, the judges unanimously decided to keep Fleur in the show.
“Well, it’s my responsibility to save the better dancer and the better dance and for me, tonight it was Fleur and Vito,” Craig Revel Horwood announced.
Motsi Mabuse echoed this, adding: “For me, there were different levels of dancing on the dance floor and I decided to choose Fleur and Vito.”
Anton Du Beke remarked: “I thought both couples danced better on Saturday night, maybe it’s the moment and being in the dance-off, they didn’t produce their best performance but sometimes it doesn’t need to be the best it just needs to be good and the one that was just good enough came from Fleur and Vito.”
Head judge Shirley Ballas agreed she would also have saved the couple.
Fleur bid co-star James a heartfelt goodbye with a hug before he responded to the result.
Strictly Come Dancing continues on Saturday at 6.30pm on BBC One.
