BLACK Narcissus is a 1939 novel that has been adapted for the small screen.
After premiering on American channel FX in November 2020, the miniseries will make its way to British screens for three consecutive nights, starting on Sunday 27th December 2020 and concluding on the Tuesday 29th December 2020.
Who is in the cast of Black Narcissus?
1) Gemma Arterton as Sister Clodagh
Gemma plays the devoted and determined leader of the Sisters of St. Faith, who vows to make the convent a success despite everyone's misgivings.
The actress got her big break on the TV adaptation of Tess of the D'Urbervilles, before going on to feature in Quantum of Solace.
She also starred in Prince of Persia and is set to star in The King's Man, the prequel to Kingsman.
2) Jim Broadbent as Father Roberts
Father Roberts is a priest based in India who pays a visit to the convent to check on the progress of Clodagh.
Jim Broadbent won an Oscar for his performance in Iris as best supporting actor back in 2001.
He is also stars in popular films such as Moulin Rouge, Paddington and Bridget Jones' Diary.
3) Aisling Franciosi as Sister Ruth
Sister Ruth is a skilled seamstress who is thrust upon Sister Clodagh by Mother Dorothea.
She begins to get ill and becomes more paranoid as she struggles with the palace’s high altitude.
Aisling is perhaps best known for her roles in The Fall and as Lyanna Stark in Game of Thrones.
4) Karen Bryson as Sister Philippa
Sister Philippa is a talented gardener who goes with Sister Clodagh to the palace of Mopu and is in awe of the beautiful and picturesque landscape.
Karen recently featured in the BBC One drama MotherFatherSon and played Avril Powell in Shameless.
In 2017, Bryson received an MBE from the Prince of Wales at an Investiture ceremony at Buckingham Palace.
5) Patsy Ferran as Sister Blanche
Sister Blanche is the young, no-nonsense sister and is favoured by Sister Clodagh.
In a stark contrast with Sister Ruth, she is great with the kids and is also goes by the name Sister Honey.
Patsy Ferran has appeared in Jamestown (as Mercy), Darkest Hour, and in God’s Own Country.
6) Rosie Cavaliero as Sister Briony
Sister Briony is the backbone of the mission in Mopu, she is the practical one who makes sure the household runs smoothly.
Cavaliero played Grace Poole in the 2011 film adaption of Jane Eyre and also featured as Elizabeth Cordingley in Gentleman Jack.
More recently, she starred in Worzel Gummidge, and ITV's Cleaning Up alongside Sheridan Smith.
7) Nila Aalia as Angu Ayah
Angu is a local woman and caretaker of Mopu Palace and has a rather tragic affiliation to the so-called House of Women.
Some of Nila's recent work includes Sky Atlantic's I Hate Suzie, A Confession, Years and Years, A Discovery of Witches (as Sylvia), and Wolfblood.
She also featured in Hollyoaks as Bel Roy from 2008-2009.
8) Diana Rigg plays Mother Dorothea
Mother Dorothea is played by the one and only Diana Rigg, who sadly passed away in September 2020.
She is the Mother Superior who sent Sister Clodagh on her mission to Mopu, but she is wary of her proud nature.
The late actress shot to fame in The Avengers and as a Bond girl in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service.
Since then she had a major role as Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones and also appeared in the likes of All Creatures Great and Small, Detectorists, and ITV’s Victoria.
Black Narcissus begins on Sunday 27th December at 9pm on BBC One.
