Class will soon be dismissed for Annalise Keating and her students.
ABC announced on Thursday that How to Get Away With Murder will wrap up its successful, suspenseful, impressive run after this upcoming sixth season.
The final season of the Emmy Award-winning drama — which debuts Thursday, September 26 at 10/9c — will follow Annalise’s charges through their final semester at law school, according to a press release by the network.
As you might expect, however, things won’t go too smoothly for them on their way to graduation.
Also per ABC: “The deception, fear and guilt binding Professor Keating to her students [will] prove deadlier than ever” on Season 6.
In a preview (down below) for the concluding run of episodes, also released today by ABC, we glimpse flashes of the most shocking moments from the previous five seasons, such as:
Asher running over Emily Sinclair… Bonnie killing Rebecca… and Annalise frantically calling out for a missing Laurel.
Viola Davis, of course, has been at the center of How to Get Away With Murder from the beginning, winnning an Emmy and becoming the first woman of color to win the Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series Award in the process.
“Viola Davis made television history with her unforgettable portrayal of iconic female antihero Annalise Keating,” Karey Burke, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a statement, adding:
“I am eternally grateful to her, Pete Nowalk and Shondaland for creating and bringing to life such a smart, sophisticated and groundbreaking series that has long been an integral part of Thursday nights on ABC.”
Davis has deservedly received top billing, but the series also stars the following actors and actresses:
Billy Brown, Jack Falahee, Aja Naomi King, Matt McGorry, Charlie Weber, Liza Weil, Conrad Ricamora, Rome Flynn and Amirah Vann.
How to Get Away With Murder premiered in September of 2014, joining Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal to form the believed Thursday night block of programming known as “TGIT.”
All three programs were produced by Shonda Rhimes.
Scandal went off the air in April of last year, while Grey’s Anatomy will probably be renewed through 2029 at some point in the near future.
Rhimes, meanwhile, recently left ABC, signing a mega deal to produce shows for Netflix.
Said creato Pete Nowalk in a lengthy statement of his own:
Deciding to end this series was a brutal decision, but ultimately the story tells you what to do – as it did here.
For me, Annalise Keating’s journey has always had a clear ending.
Knowing I have 15 episodes left to finish her story, and the chance to give all the characters their own killer endings, is a gift rarely given to a series creator and I’m grateful to ABC and ABC Studios for the opportunity and creative freedom.
I am so thankful to the brilliant cast, writers and crew for dedicating themselves to the most rewarding experience of my career over the last six years. I also want to thank our fans.
The only reason this show exists is because of your loyalty and enthusiasm.
I can’t wait for you all to see how it ends, with twists and turns and all the craziness we love to create every Thursday night. Buckle up.
