Earlier this year, London-based label LABRUM returned to the runway, spreading its West African identity across the capital’s Southern neighborhood. LABRUM’s Fall/Winter 2023 “From Greener Pastures” showcase was an intimate musical journey through culture and heritage, connecting disjoined families separated by land and sea.
Designer Foday Dumbuya stormed the food-filled halls of Brixton Market, paying tribute to global residents and vendors that build community on the daily. Ahead of its Spring/Summer 2024 show at London Fashion Week, LABRUM has released a sentimental film documenting its “From Greener Pastures” collection.
Directed by rising creative julianknxx, the picture overlooks the Brixton skyline with delicate saxophone solos by London’s Balimaya Project musicians. Nigerian poet Inua Ellams recites a sentimental storyline on troubling immigrant backgrounds, while Uganian locals detail their optimistic journey to England. Elaborate shots of LABRUM’s FW23 runway are previewed in a cherished light, completing the video with traditional African dance choreography.
