Sherlock Holmes 3 is coming soon to cinemas with Robert Downey Jr returning as the detective, but there is still no word yet on Sherlock season five from the BBC or Netflix. Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss have all said at one time or another they would be up for another series of Sherlock, but no plans have been revealed just yet. The BBC, and Netflix however, could announce Sherlock season five soon if a few clues are to be believed.
When will Sherlock season 5 be released?
Until recently, Sherlock fans thought that the next season of their beloved BBC detective show was a long time away.
Co-showrunner Steven Moffat told Digital Spy: “I haven’t really thought about it. Mark [Gatiss, co-showrunner]’s been doing other stuff as well, so we haven’t sat down and had a proper talk about what we would do with another series.”
However, a revelation from the owner of Speedy’s cafe (which features in the show) Chris Georgiou in a Time Out article has led some to think fifth season may be closer than expected.
In the piece, he said: “I probably shouldn’t be saying this, but I’ve heard they’ll be coming back for a fifth season.”
Though Gatiss has called this “utter nonsense,” the fact that Steven Moffat is no longer working on Doctor Who and Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange is dead (for now) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe means that the pair may have more time on their hands.

Who will be in the Sherlock season 5 cast?
Obviously, any season of the smash BBC show would have to include Sherlock Holmes (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and John Watson (Martin Freeman).
Cumberbatch is keen to revisit the character again.
In 2014, he told Vogue: “If we can keep the quality up, I can’t imagine that I will ever get tired of being Sherlock.”
In 2017 he said to GQ: “The idea of never playing him again is really galling.”
Martin Freeman has been less keen.
He told The Telegraph he did not want to do the show for the wrong reasons.
He said: “It’s not a thing to be enjoyed, it’s a thing of, ‘You better f****** do this, otherwise you’re a c***’. That’s not fun anymore.”
Although no other cast members have been confirmed, it is also likely that a fifth season would see a return of Mark Gatiss in his role as Sherlock’s brother Mycroft Holmes.

What will happen in Sherlock season 5?
No plot details have emerged, though members of the cast and crew have shared their ideas of what they would look to see from a future series.
On a Facebook post, Steven Moffat shared his thoughts about how he saw the series.
He described the first four series as “Chapter One,” in which, “Dr Watson is now Doyle’s brave widower and Sherlock Holmes has become the wise and humane version of the main run of the stories (we’ve focused, so far, on the cold Holmes of the early days.)”
He goes on to picture “Chapter Two” as “our boys consciously living the myth and battling wrong-doers”.
Benedict Cumberbatch told Vogue: “I’d love to play him as an old man.”
This suggests a new version of Sherlock similar to that attempted in the 2015 film Mr Holmes, starring Ian McKellen as the detective in his old age.
